From our Music Directors:
A Unique Week!!
Free concerts this week in Hancock and Swanzey feature the return of the Ciompi String Quartet, performing one of Beethoven's great works - the string quartet in e minor Op. 59 #2. Also returning will be clarinetist Steve Jackson and percussionist David Schotzko. New arrival, Rahim AlHaj, will bring traditional Iraqi oud music and his own compositions to the Deering free concert, and to the Peterborough Town House on Saturday, where he will appear together with the Ciompi Quartet.
Ancient Voices (Saturday, 8PM) promises music of the highest caliber from many different sources: virtuosi in the folk traditions of Ireland and the Mideast, along with the transcendent voices of Olivier Messiaen and George Crumb. Messaien responded to, and was inspired, by birdsong as he wrote Petites Esquisses d'Oiseaux. Crumb took flight in his Voice of the Whale upon hearing the groundbreaking recordings of whalesong made in the '70s by biologist Roger Payne. Pianist Emma Tahmizian joins flutist Laura Gilbert and cellist Rafael Popper-Keizer for this 20th century masterpiece.
Also on Saturday, at a 5PM pre-concert, our audience has an opportunity to hear one of the milestone works of the 20th century, Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time (Quatuor Pour le Fin de Temps), a one-of-a-kind work for piano, violin, cello, and clarinet that was written from the depths of World War II, to be played by Messiaen's fellow prisoners at a Nazi concentration camp. Hearing our wonderful musicians perform this is an opportunity not to be missed!
(Follow the asterisk * for information on another event this night!)
Sunday at 3PM marks the return to the Monadnock Music stage of world-renowned pianist Konstantin Lifschitz, in a recital that includes Bach, Chopin, and Scriabin.
- Jonathan Bagg and Laura Gilbert
