CARLOS HOMS

PIANO

Carlos Homs began his piano studies at the age of 12. Under the guidance of Vincent Partesi, Carlos was introduced to different styles of music including classical, jazz and rock. He began to play at his church as an accompanist for the youth choir, eventually becoming the music director, arranging hymns for multiple voices. With a particular interest in improvisation, Carlos enrolled in the Jazz Institute of New Jersey where he was mentored by organist Radam Schwartz. In his three years with the Institute, Carlos made many of the connections that would set up his musical journey for the rest of his life. The most influential of these connections was drummer/pianist/composer Tyshawn Sorey, who opened Carlos’ ears to 20th century composers such as Georgy Ligeti, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Anthony Braxton. Carlos began to compose around this time, leading his own trio and playing gigs around New Jersey. In high school, Carlos enrolled in the NJ Performing Arts Center Jazz for Teens program where he studied with jazz veterans including Mike LeDonne, Ralph Peterson, Don Braden and Joris Teepe. His first major performance was a gig at the NJPAC with bebop legend James Moody. After graduating high school, Carlos moved to Boston to study sound design at Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, Carlos joined trumpeter Jason Palmer’s quintet, giving him an opportunity to perform every weekend at the historic Wally’s Café. He also got a chance to travel around the world with different bands led by other students at Berklee. Anxious to be in New York, Carlos transferred over to the New School for Social Research where is currently enrolled, working for a BFA. Since his move to New York, Carlos has worked and played with Reggie Workman, Kelvin Bell, Peter Evans, Tyshawn Sorey, William Parker, Daniel Carter, J.D. Parran, The Classical Theatre of Harlem and other musicians of diverse musical backgrounds. Carlos is currently working on his own project focusing on live electronic dance music.
