Michael Sussman has served as principal clarinetist with the orchestras of the Bolshoi Ballet, Royal Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, D’Oyley Carte Opera, and Brooklyn Philharmonic. He is current principal clarinetist with the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the New Hampshire Symphony. He performed and recorded extensively with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra from 1981 to 1993 and has also performed and recorded, on classical period clarinets, with the Handel & Haydn Society ( Boston). He has appeared as soloist and recitalist throughout the US and has concertized in 32 countries on four continents. As a chamber musician, his credits include Speculum Musicae, Fine Arts Chamber Ensemble, Music in Avila in Curacao, Mohawk Trail Concerts, and solo appearances with string quartets including the New Zealand, St. Petersburg, Lark, and Ciompi String Quartets. He is currently a member of the Avanti Wind Quintet. He is Professor of Music at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. He has recorded for fifteen labels, most recently on Deutsche Grammophon, Koch, and Gasparo.
