Residing in New York City, the Second Instrumental Unit is currently concluding their third full season. Their mission is to build a strong rapport with many of the great living composers of today and tomorrow: performing some of their most important works while working together with them to create new ones. The Unit has been featured both as Resident Ensemble, and as Guest Ensemble at Queens College, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Ball State University, Columbia, Bates College, University of Western Michigan, and the Juilliard School. At Queens College (Aaron Copland School of Music), they have just completed their second season as ensemble in residence, premiering over 50 new works by student composers. A highlight last season included a debut in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, in a tribute concert celebrating Milton Babbitt. This summer the Unit has been invited as the featured ensemble at the American Composers Alliance (ACA) Festival in Symphony Space in New York City. The Unit is appearing for their second summer at Monadnock Music. David Fulmer, the SIU’s co-founder and director, has just received the prestigious Charles Ives Award (Scholarship) from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He graduated last spring from Juilliard, pursuing studies in composition with Milton Babbitt and violin with Robert Mann in the Masters program, and he is currently resuming his studies there as a C.V. Starr Doctoral Fellow. He has appeared this season at Lincoln Center, most recently in the “Great Performers” series, as well as Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress. He has lectured on musical topics at the Philadelphia Modern Languages Association Conference; International Society of the Arts, Mathematics, and Architecture; BRIDGES International Mathematics Conference; Banff Centre; Hildegard Von Bingen Society.
