STEVEN JACKSON

CLARINET

Steven Jackson was born in Chicago, where he began playing the clarinet at age nine. He attended Boston University, studying with Harold Wright, principal clarinetist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. For nine seasons, Jackson was principal clarinetist of the Shreveport (LA) Summer Music Festival, where he also appeared as soloist. He has subsequently performed at the Athens ( Greece), Blossom, Marlboro, Mostly Mozart, Rockport, and Tanglewood festivals. Currently he performs with the Boston Lyric Opera and is principal clarinetist of the Orchestra of Indian Hill, Granite State Symphony, and Nashua (NH) Symphony. He has appeared with many of New England’s other leading orchestras including the Boston Symphony, Boston Pops and Boston Ballet. He has participated in many premieres, including those of works by Elliott Carter, Meyer Kupferman, and Ralph Shapey. Solo appearances with orchestra include the concerti of Carter, Copland, Finzi, Mozart, and Weber. As chamber musician he appears with Emmanuel Music and Vermont Musica Viva, and was recently named a member of Music at Eden’s Edge. He has been recognized for special achievement in performance by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and can be heard on the CRI, Dorian, Gasparo, Marlboro Recording Society, and Sony Classical labels. He has been at Monadnock Music since 1998.
