The Sound of Color -Debussy and the Visual Arts

A chance to see, hear, and ponder the ties between musical and visual impressionism, with performances by Ms. Amper and discussion by art historian Ann Allen.

 

SATURDAY, JULY 12, 8 PM: Serenades, James Bolle, conductor

Mozart: Wind Serenade in c minor K. 388 • Stravinsky: “Dumbarton Oaks” Concerto • Debussy: Danse sacrée et danse profane for harp and strings, with Stacey Shames, harp • Brahms: Serenade in A, Op. 16

For our opening weekend, four of history’s great musical imaginations turn their attention to the rich sonic possibilities of the chamber orchestra.

Antheil: 2nd Violin Sonata • Dvorak: Piano Trio in f minor, Op. 65 • Lourie: Duo • Schoenberg: “Verklaerte Nacht” for String Sextet, Op. 4

Four brilliant episodes from the brief but momentous era in which musical romanticism turned the sharp corner toward modernism.

 

SUNDAY, JULY 20, 4 PM: Rieko Aizawa: Piano Recital Series

5 PM: PRE-CONCERT Quartet for the End of Time

Olivier Messiaen’s masterpiece performed in honor of his 100th Birthday

8 PM: Ancient Voices

Messiaen: “Petites Esquisses d’Oiseaux” for piano • Celtic flute and guitar • Music for oud and string quartet • Crumb: “Voice of the Whale” • Vali: “Folk Songs”

This year’s version of the Kitchen Sink concert focuses on music rooted deeply in ancient culture and in the natural world: Rahim Al-haj performs his original oud compositions; flute virtuoso David Weiss plays traditional Celtic music; modern voices Crumb, Messiaen and Vali weave some of these ancient strands into their music.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 2, 8 PM: James Bolle and the Festival Orchestra

Konstantin Lifschitz, piano soloist Rafael Popper-Keizer, cello soloist

Weber: Overture to Oberon • Grieg: Piano Concerto • Kuss: Rhapsody for cello and orchestra (first performance) • Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”

Bolle, Lifschitz, Popper-Keizer, and festival musicians share the stage in a concert from the heart of the classical repertoire, plus a new concerto by Mark Kuss.

Free Concert honoring Elliott Carter’s 100th birthday

Gideon: Creature to Creature • Martino: Piano Trio (2004) • Carter: “A Mirror on Which to Dwell” • Bolle: Sinfonie III & IV (premiere)

Carter’s famous setting of Elizabeth Bishop poems, surrounded by some of his august American contemporaries: Miriam Gideon, Donald Martino, and MM’s James Bolle, conducting his newest work. With soprano Tony Arnold and mezzo Elizabeth Shammash.

Percussionist David Schotzko programs a compelling journey into the spectacular sound-world of beaten instruments from the vibraphone to Djembe drums. A new-music concert for all ages. With composer Joseph Schwantner, guest speaker.

 

SUNDAY, AUGUST 10, 5 PM: Virginia Eskin: Piano Recital Series

Bach: French Suite in G major • Foote: Five Poems of Omar Khayyam, Op. 41 • Ravel: Gaspard Suite • Bartok: Petite Suite • Grofe: Shades of Blue Suite

A “Suite of Suites” from Bach to Bartok, delivered by one of the region’s unique musical personalities.

Our annual concert showcasing MM’s resident young ensemble.

8 PM: Philippe Castagner, tenor, Jane Hawkins, piano

Internationally acclaimed tenor. Performing works by Schubert.

 

SUNDAY, AUGUST 17, 4 PM: Dreams and Prayers

Part: “Spiegel im Spiegel” • Schoenfi eld: “In Memoriam” • Bach: “Bete aber auch dabei” • Shapey: “O Jerusalem” • Brahms: Two Alto Songs • Golijov: “Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind”

Music of deep introspection spanning nearly 300 years ends Monadnock Music’s 2008 season. Vocalists Ilana Davidson and Elizabeth Shammash sing Bach, Brahms and Shapey, with Osvaldo Golijov’s famous klezmer-inspired quintet finishing the program.
